Frizz Driving You Wild? 11 Ways to Tame the Beast!

Let's talk Frizz! Frizz will have your curls playing hide and seek through hair static. I've lost some amazing 'dos to this culprit. Please don't get me wrong! If you follow me on social media, you know I love a voluminous fro! However, in the beginning days of a new hairstyle, you want frizz free results so that your hair will be moisturized and long-lasting!

So, let's help you steer clear of any problems! These are my eleven secrets to completely eliminating frizz. Frizz-free twist out results are at the end of this article!

11 Tips to Avoid Frizz

Work In Sections - You want to make sure that each strand of hair is getting an equal amount of TLC! The goal is to section your hair into 4-8 sections (depending on your hair density) - this way, you're not grabbing random pieces of hair, but catching every tangle and potential fly-away.

Apply Products In The Shower or with a Spray Bottle - Water to natural hair is like honey to a bee - it is a necessity to ensure survival. Detangling soaking wet hair avoids the production of frizz and breakage. Water is a Naturalista's go-to when they need moisture. More moisture, less to no frizz. Not only are you avoiding frizz, but you're preventing single-strand knots and split ends, as well.

Detangle with a Detangling Brush - This is not to say you can not detangle with a comb. BUT! If your desired hairstyle involves a lot of definition and harmonized coils, a detangling brush will seal the deal. This hair tool emphasizes curl definition and promotes a uniformed look.

Rinse with Cold Water - Oh don't we love a good 'ol skin melting hot shower. I know I do! Hot water is good for attacking that product build up and emphasizing the treatment process of your favourite deep conditioner! When it's time to rinse, consider cold water. This cooler option seals in the moisture you achieved from your conditioning agents, as it closes the hair cuticles, which then reduces any frizz.

Work on Soaking Wet Hair - This tip is for my Wash-and-Goers (WAGers). The state that your hair is in while styling will determine the state of your hair when it is dry. Styling your hair while it is soaking wet allows your hair to dry without frizz in sight, since the hair strands will be more flexible and easier to clump. Once the leave-in conditioner and curling aid are applied, they will add to the amount of moisture that the water provided and lock those defined strands in place!

Dry with a Cotton Shirt - For those of you that don't want to walk around with a wet head all day - don't reach for that towel! The rigged texture of a towel will snag at your strands causing not only frizz, but breakage. A cotton shirt or cotton hair towel is a great alternative that offers smooth and gentle tugs to your hair, keeping everything neat and in place.

Trim Those Ends - No, sis, they're not going to disappear on their own! Those straggly ends disrupt any curly girl hairstyle. Keep those coils bouncy and uniformed by snipping those stubborn ends!

Seal Seal Seal! - Any leave-in conditioner or curling cream can give the greatest definition and moisture. However, without sealing that very moisture in with an oil (or butter), that definition may not last.

Style With Care - A wash day is supposed to be TLC for your hair, not a WWE match! Tugging, snapping and pulling are not to be a part of your hair regime. Be gentle! Detangle slowly from ends to roots. If you feel you can't handle the size of your section, split it in half! There's no rush on wash day. That's why it takes 5-6 hours! It's like you're giving your hair a spa day.

Let Hair Dry 100% Before Unraveling - Yikes! Am I speaking too loudly? We have ALL disobeyed this one before! You think you'll be good and then half way through unraveling, a section shrivels up. Well, don't do it, girl! In order to hold the style you set, it has to be completely dry. So, let your hair be! There are many ways to style your hair during this process! Style your twists or throw on a cute headwrap! It's just not worth it to lose that style you worked so hard for!

Protect Your Hair with a Silk or Satin Scarf and Bonnet - Frizz loves an unprotected head. Imagine how many times you roll around in bed while you are sleeping. Your edges, hair strands and those stubborn roots will give you havoc in the morning if you don't tie your head. If you can not stand the feeling of your head being wrapped up, opt for a silk pillowcase.
